  • Denver Beer Co.

1695 Platte St., Denver LoDo/Ballpark/Commons Park

Like its name, Denver Beer Co. is simple and straightforward. The owners, Charlie Berger and Patrick Crawford, aren't trying to reinvent the wheel; they just want to make great beer. But you'll rarely find the same beer there twice, as Berger and Crawford are constantly coming up with new recipes for a wide variety of styles, all of which they make in their seven-barrel brewhouse. Also on the menu at the 3,400-square-foot spot, which includes an outdoor biergarten with long tables: big Bavarian-style pretzels with dipping sauces.

  • Belleview Station Tap & Burger

4910 S. Newport St. Denver Tech Center

    720-583-1367

The burgers at this outpost of the local chain are hefty and juicy, ranging from the classic Shroom Luvas to the slightly overboard house burger, piled with smoked pulled pork, a thick-cut onion ring and two kinds of cheese. Add-ons like a fried egg or a luxurious slab of foie gras turn the basic burger into an all-out dining experience. Tap & Burger doesn't stop at standard ground cow; for something different, go with lamb, turkey, grassfed beef or a meatless Impossible burger.

  • The Farm House Restaurant at Breckenridge Brewery

    2990 Brewery Lane Littleton

    303-803-1380

The Farm House at Breckenridge Brewery, the 8,000-square-foot restaurant on the twelve-acre, $36 million Breckenridge Brewery campus in Littleton, is nothing like the tap houses of yore. If not for the barn-like architectural elements — a vaulted ceiling, big windows and corrugated metal on the walls — the main dining room could pass for a country club, with silk flowers, elegant upholstered chairs and a stone fireplace that adds intimacy and warmth. The central bar and reception area are more whimsical in feel, with aspen trees sporting shimmery leaves cut from beer cans and a mannequin with a skirt made of grain bags. Even on weeknights, people relax for hours on the large, grassy lawn, sitting by fire pits and playing cornhole until it’s nearly too dark to see. The all-day menu is heavy on burgers and sandwiches. Heartier fare includes entrees such as steak, fish and chips and buttermilk fried chicken.

  • Highland Tap & Burger

    2219 W. 32nd Ave., Denver Highland/Lower Highland

    720-287-4493

When Highland Tap & Burger opened in 2010, it was designed as a watering hole for a neighborhood in flux: Northwest Denver was rapidly gentrifying, displacing much of the Mexican-American community that had been there for multiple generations (most of the Italian families were already gone). But Highland Tap wanted to bring everyone to the table, to be a place where people could gather and talk about community issues while enjoying a good burger and a drink. Over the past decade, the bar has succeeded in its goal, and expanded its mission to new taprooms in Sloan’s Lake, Denver Tech Center and Westminster.

  • Hops & Pie

    3920 Tennyson St., Denver Berkeley/Sunnyside

    303-477-7000

Since it debuted in 2010, Hops & Pie has been a go-to for beer lovers, thanks to its long, ever-rotating tap list and lots of special hop-fueled events. In 2023, it debuted a new, expansive patio, which is an ideal place to settle in with a cold one and a slice of sourdough-crust pizza — which it serves in several styles, including Detroit — or one of its stellar sandwiches of the week.

  • Kline's Beer Hall

    7519 Grandview Ave. Arvada

    303-351-7938

Housemade sausages and a smattering of Eastern European small plates are the primary dinner offerings at Kline's, which makes sense for an old-world beer hall. But Kline's keeps from sliding into oompah-band kitschiness with its austere, DIY decor and comprehensive list of craft beers divided into "featured friends," rarities on rotation, staff picks and seasonal specials — like July's "summer of sours." You won't see sudsy steins being waved in the air here; instead, brews come in sensible portions to make sampling your way through the selection that much easier.

  • Lady Justice Brewing

    3242 S. Acoma St. Englewood

    303-578-8226

There was a collective pause when Lady Justice announced it was leaving north Aurora for Englewood. The Aurora scene has recovered nicely, though, with the opening of several standout breweries and a cidery in that area. And Lady Justice sorely needed an expanded taproom. The brewery can now hold bigger and better events, regularly filling the house with fans from all over the metro area. Owners Betsy Lay and Alison Wisneski finally have a space worthy of their dedication to improving the world and getting people together while promoting worthwhile causes.

  • Lowry Beer Garden

    7577 E. Academy Blvd., Denver Park Hill/Mayfair/Lowry

    303-366-0114

Even parents with toddlers in tow need a place to kick back with cold beers. The Lowry Beer Garden is the hangout of choice for young families in east Denver — and with good reason. The phrase “beer garden” is often misapplied to simple patios and decks, but here almost every seat is outdoors, and even the indoor seating is covered by only a vaulted roof with roll-up siding for walls. Stay late after all the kids go home, and you’ll have a prime spot for enjoying Colorado’s clear and crisp nights.

  • New Terrain Brewing Company

    16401 Table Mountain Parkway Golden

    720-697-7848

With a dog park, bike park, major hiking trails and a mountain out its back door, it’s no wonder New Terrain is the busiest brewery in the area. Jokes will be made about children and dogs, but the vibe is very much about outdoor fun. If you don't mind a crowd, even on weekdays, you can't beat sitting on the patio that overlooks both Table Mountains while sipping on a wide selection of beers, sampling food from a visiting truck and listening to a band. The beer is nothing to sniff at: The brewery has won a pair of Great American Beer Festival awards over the past few years.

  • Our Mutual Friend Brewing Company

2810 Larimer St., Denver Five Points/RiNo

    303-296-3441

Hanging out at the OMF taproom is like being at a house party; there are often more folks standing around than sitting down. They’re part of a fun, diverse and younger crowd than you find at your typical brewery. The beer matches that demographic as well — IPAs, lagers, and barrel-aged, smoked and experimental beers. A visit to OMF is a great way to start or end an evening, as the RiNo neighborhood has plenty of food, drink and entertainment amenities.

  • The Pint Room

    2620 W. Bellview Ave. Littleton

    720-283-3200

Beer-and-burger specialist the Pint Room got its start in Dublin, Ohio, in 2012, offering 101 beers on tap. A second spot with 126 taps opened two years later in Carmel, Indiana. And in the spring of 2015, the company opened its third Pint Room in Littleton, in the former home of the Celtic Tavern on West Belleview Avenue, where the pattern of growth will continue: This Pint Room has 175 taps, and a good portion of those are dedicated to Colorado beers. The bar program includes infused vodkas and a whiskey list -- primarily bourbons -- that top off at about 100 selections, and the food showcases Colorado meat as much as possible.

  • Rocky Mountain Tap & Garden

    1071 Courtesy Rd. Louisville

    720-900-2440

With thirty self-serve taps flowing, Rocky Mountain Tap & Garden offers a wide variety of beer, from local standouts like Call to Arms Brewing and Westbound & Down Brewing to national stalwarts like Firestone Walker Brewing Company. The simple, straightforward menu offers excellent accompaniments for the brews, including a Nashville hot chicken sandwich, fish and chips, mac and cheese, a barbecue plate and a wagyu burger.
  • Royal Hilltop

    18581 E. Hampden Ave. Aurora

    303-690-7738

Owners James and Tina Pachorek did something restaurateurs too often forget when they opened this small, family-oriented British-style pub in the far reaches of eastern Aurora: They created a casual, laid-back, non-threatening restaurant that people want to return to. The menu, while lacking the glitz and style of trendier eateries, is filled with soul-satisfying pub food -- bangers and mash, shepherd's pie with stout gravy, fish fry every night of the week -- and the bar is always well-stocked.

  • Sloan's Lake Tap & Burger

    1565 Raleigh St. Northwest Denver

    720-410-6899

Sloan's Lake Tap & Burger, which opened in the West Colfax neighborhood in summer 2016, is the sister restaurant to the ridiculously popular Highland version. This Tap is bigger in almost every respect. Higher ceilings, an enormous bar, more TVs, massive windows — even the menu has been beefed up with the addition of barbecue. What hasn't changed is the measured approach to the burgers. Neither re-creating the classic nor redesigning it until it's no longer recognizable, Sloan's Lake offers burgers that fall somewhere in the middle, rethinking the American icon while still celebrating it. Also intact is the casual, seat-yourself attitude of the staffers, who are friendly and prompt but behave more like sports-bar employees than restaurant servers. The tap handles represent an interesting and well-rounded run of mostly Colorado beers. But the partners behind Sloan's Lake recognize the importance of food at their place, too, and applied a fine-dining sensibility to a pub-like menu. The result is a board that focuses on burgers and other typical bar-food items — but burgers and bar-food items that taste much better than those at your typical bar.

  • Stanley Beer Hall

    2501 Dallas St. Aurora

    720-749-5098

Stanley Marketplace resolutely refuses to refer to itself as a mall, and while the idea of many different merchants under one roof certainly brings to mind the "m" word, this complex has a few very important tenants that differentiate it from the pink-and-teal edifices of the ’80s. One of those is the Stanley Beer Hall, the light, bright space at the corner of the Marketplace that opens onto an expansive beer garden. With an equally expansive selection of brews (standard styles like pale ales and saisons share space with a selection of nitro beers and sours) and a solid menu of substantial bar food (burgers, brats and a few mains), shopping at the Stanley is way more fun than it was when your mom took you to the mall to get new underwear.

  • Tap Fourteen Colorado Beer Garden

    400 E. 19th Ave. Central Denver

    720-612-4604

Tap Fourteen opened its second Denver beer bar in January 2018, following the original on the rooftop of Hayter's at 1920 Blake Street. This one is on street level, so it lacks the views of the LoDo location, but the wrap-around patio makes an ideal spot for neighbors and their pooches to wander in for a cold brew or two. Seventy tap handles make decisions a little tough, but you'll never want for something original, and the kitchen goes a step above standard taproom fare.
