  • The Broken Cage

    2420 17th St. Downtown Denver

    720-420-0620

In January 2020, Layla Friend opened the Denver location of the Broken Cage with help from her former employers at the original in Orlando. The narrow, plant-strewn space is a cozy escape for sipping cocktails that go heavy on floral and herbaceous notes. Unlike the Florida location, this version of the Broken Cage serves a small menu of snacks so you can nosh on Caesar salad and garlicky fries while you go for round two.
  • Cheeky Monk

534 E. Colfax Ave. Central Denver

    303-861-0347

Can an upscale Belgian beer cafe work on one of the weirdest, wildest stretches of Colfax Avenue? Absolutely. Not only is Cheeky Monk a destination restaurant for all you European beer snobs looking for unpronounceable brews made by monks who've dedicated their lives to Jesus and zymurgy, but it also happens to be a great place to sample the rather unique cuisine of the Benelux -- all mussels and frites and sausages and some of the best sauerkraut ever made. You can thank the folks who brought us a true Brit pub in Aurora -- the Royal Hilltop -- for giving Colfax this cheeky concept.

  • Colt & Gray

    1553 Platte St. Downtown Denver

    303-477-1447

Colt & Gray is an exercise in how far someone — chef/owner Nelson Perkins, in this case — can push a neighborhood restaurant without going completely over the edge. Since it opened at the foot of the 16th Street pedestrian bridge connecting Commons Park to LoHi in August 2009, this compact eatery has been an equally good spot for savoring a perfectly executed cocktail while you eat your way through one of the best and most interesting happy-hour menus in town, or sipping a specially selected glass of wine while enjoying a special night out in the small but elegant, well-staffed dining room. The dinner menu is well thought out, too, with a number of dishes built around parts of the animal that some people would consider scraps, including a roasted marrow bone that concentrates the essence of grilled meat into a buttery spread.

  • Lower48 Kitchen

2020 Lawrence St., Unit A Downtown Denver

    303-942-0262

"I've worked in restaurants my whole life," says Mario Nocifera, who co-owns Lower48 with business partner and executive chef Alex Figura; the pair met while working at Frasca Food and Wine. "I've always wanted to build a restaurant -- that's been my dream for years -- and our goal is to continue to make Denver a great dining destination; we're striving to be great regionally, and we want to be a part of why people go on destination food trips." And they’ve succeeded. Four months after they opened Lower48 Kitchen in the sleek new 2020 Lawrence building at the edge of the Ballpark neighborhood, Westword named it the Best New Restaurant in the Best of Denver 2014. And recent menu tweaks have only made it better. Why should food this good be reserved for special occasions? Fortunately, with Lower48’s menu format -– which puts control in diners’ hands with two-dollar bites and refined yet affordable small plates -– it doesn’t have to be.

  • McLoughlin's

    2100 16th Street, Suite 145 Downtown Denver

    303-573-5131

Located just west of the Millennium bridge from 15th Street, North at Little Raven one block to 16th Street, McLoughlin's offers refreshing cuisine in one of the very first areas settled along the Front Range of Colorado, in the quiet and once-forgotten heart of Denver. The area is populated by many parks and walkways along the confluence of Cherry Creek and the South Platte River; it is home to urban dwellers in high rise buildings that surround the small, vibrant shopping district.
