  • 1STBANK Center

11450 Broomfield Lane, Broomfield Northwest Denver Suburbs

    303-410-0700

Connoisseurs of live music will tell you that something is lost when an artist becomes popular enough to perform in an arena. While this may be true at some places, it's certainly not the case at Broomfield's 1STBANK Center, where the sound is pretty well dialed in virtually anywhere you sit. The venue, which sits halfway between Denver and Boulder, has hosted a variety of acts, from Radiohead and Portishead to Kelly Clarkson and the Black Keys. Shows of this caliber feel far more intimate here than you'd expect.

  • Arapahoe Basin Ski Area

28194 US Highway 6, Dillon Mountains

    888-272-7246

Many consider Arapahoe Basin, endearingly known as A-Basin, to be one of the most underrated ski areas in the state. It certainly has the longest season -- usually from mid-October to early June – because the north-facing slopes get less sun and the snow sticks around. A-Basin is a sibling of Breckenridge and Keystone, and while it may not have their amount of acreage, it has plenty of steep glades, bump runs and and out-of-bounds skiing. It also has the best parking-lot parties of any mountain in the state.

  • The Bar Car

    819 Colorado Blvd. Central Denver

    720-524-8099

When Leigh Jones — of Horseshoe Lounge fame — bought the Recovery Room a decade ago, she overhauled it completely. The resulting Bar Car looks a little nondescript, but the rustic interior, with its old-timey railroad theme, is a pleasant surprise. Also pleasantly surprising, given Colorado Boulevard’s penchant for chains, is that the Bar Car is defiantly neighborhood-focused, offering a list of draft beers that’s heavy on locals. Patrons are local, too, whether they’re stopping by for the daily happy hour or the not-so-secret secret food menu, checking sports scores or just soaking up the warm surroundings late at night.

  • Bar Standard

    1037 Broadway Central Denver

    720-416-6209

Once the home of Serengeti and Shelter, Bar Standard is an Art Deco-themed, modern-day speakeasy. While the name and look may have changed, the club, housed in the former Jonas Bros. Furs building, still brings in some of the area's best DJs -- who spin house and dance music -- as well as more high-profile national DJs. In addition, Bar Standard occasionally brings in live acts like the Cool Kids to perform on a decent-sized stage. The main area of the upscale club fills up quickly on the weekends, but there are two patios, both of which offer decent views of Denver's skyline, to escape the masses.

  • Bastien's Restaurant

3503 E. Colfax Ave., Denver Capitol Hill/Uptown/City Park

    303-322-0363

With its iconic sign, sunken bar and mid-century aesthetic, Bastien's is a holdover from times past — and we wouldn't have it any other way. The family-run business dates back to the 1930s, but the current restaurant was constructed from scratch in 1958. That sign outside the Googie-style building touts the famed Bastien’s sugar steak, but there are many other preparations to choose from. And whether or not you splurge on a full steak dinner, nothing beats sipping Colfax dirty martinis delivered by friendly servers who've been working at this classic for years.

  • Beta

    1909 Blake St. Downtown Denver

    303-383-1909

It's not the state-of-the-art sound system, the primo location in LoDo or the crowds of beautiful people that make Beta Denver's best dance club (though none of that hurts). No, it's the high-caliber talent the place brings in week after week. Beta has hosted a cavalcade of talent that reads like a who's who of the world's top dance-music acts.

  • Casa Bonita

6715 W. Colfax Ave., Lakewood West Denver Suburbs

    303-232-5115

The reopening of the iconic pink palace under new owners Trey Parker and Matt Stone has been a South Park-worthy saga. While some people are frustrated by the ongoing, email-only invite system, those who have snagged a reservation can attest to the fact that the controlled crowds add to the magic. Yes, chef Dana Rodriguez upped the food game, but a visit here is about so much more than what’s on your plate. It’s an experience that’s nostalgic in all the best ways, whether you’re visiting for the first time or the hundredth.

  • Casselman's Bar & Venue

    2620 Walnut St. Downtown Denver

    720-242-8923

The last word of the name Casselman's Bar & Venue really tells you what you need to know: This is a venue, above all, and a huge one, located on a warehouse-y stretch of Walnut Street in the Ballpark neighborhood. While the venue brings in an assortment of acts throughout the week, the space can feel a bit cavernous on an off night. Still, the long bar up front is always welcoming, flanked on one side by couches and pillows under drawings of Mos Def, Jay-Z and other artists. If there's no live music to move you, you can swing on a giant tire swing or play beer pong. And if you need some sustenance to sop up all that beer, Casselman's has a small but serviceable menu, full of burgers and sandwiches, appetizers and a few Mexican specials.

    2500 York St. Downtown Denver

    720-865-3410

It’s hard to find an eighteen-hole regulation golf course that has views of both a major city and a major mountain range. But Denver’s City Park Golf Course does. The location is convenient, of course – just east of downtown by City Park – and it has a full driving range, repair shop, restaurant and junior course. With its sloping greens, fairways and unique bunkering, the course also lays claim to being one of the toughest in the area.

  • Colorado Convention Center

    700 14th St. Downtown Denver

    303-228-8000

Every major city needs a good convention center, and the Colorado Convention Center certainly does the trick for this metropolis. The center has 63 meeting rooms, two giant ballrooms, a 5,000-seat theater and a big blue bear (otherwise known as “I See What You Mean,” by Lawrence Argent) gazing through the floor-to-ceiling windows off 14th Street; it hosts everything from all-night raves to business conventions within its walls. It’s conveniently located next to the Denver Performing Arts Complex, within walking distance of many of the city’s best hotels and restaurants, and just a couple of blocks from the 16th Street Mall. And although it’s not the newest convention center in the country (it was finished in 1990), it was the first event and conference center in the world to be certified to a new international sustainability standard in 2012. Clearly, the facility is way ahead of its time.

  • Copper Kettle Brewing

1338 S. Valentia St., Unit 100 Southeast Denver

    720-443-2522

Copper Kettle Brewing opened in April 2011 on the border of Denver and Aurora, hoping to fill a geographic hole in the metro area's craft-beer scene. But owners Jeremy Gobien and Kristen Kozik had no idea just how thirsty their neighbors would be: Within months, they expanded their brewing capacity by 166 percent. The taphouse itself doesn't serve food, but it is elegantly furnished and keeps menus on hand so patrons can have food delivered to pair with Copper Kettle's ever-rotating list of German- and American-style brews.

  • Crema Coffee House

2862 Larimer St., Denver Five Points/RiNo

    720-235-2995

Crema Coffeehouse draws its name from the rich, caramel-colored foam that caps any decent shot of espresso right after it's pulled. And that's the primary job of the baristas at Crema: to pull decent shots of espresso. They also brew coffee from a handful of roasters. Crema is located on Larimer Street, just above the Ballpark neighborhood. It's one of the most eclectic areas in town, and local artists and musicians spend a lot of time on the couches in this sparse, urban shop.

  • Denver Beer Co.

1695 Platte St., Denver LoDo/Ballpark/Commons Park

Like its name, Denver Beer Co. is simple and straightforward. The owners, Charlie Berger and Patrick Crawford, aren't trying to reinvent the wheel; they just want to make great beer. But you'll rarely find the same beer there twice, as Berger and Crawford are constantly coming up with new recipes for a wide variety of styles, all of which they make in their seven-barrel brewhouse. Also on the menu at the 3,400-square-foot spot, which includes an outdoor biergarten with long tables: big Bavarian-style pretzels with dipping sauces.
