  • Crema Coffee House

2862 Larimer St., Denver Five Points/RiNo

    720-235-2995

Crema Coffeehouse draws its name from the rich, caramel-colored foam that caps any decent shot of espresso right after it's pulled. And that's the primary job of the baristas at Crema: to pull decent shots of espresso. They also brew coffee from a handful of roasters. Crema is located on Larimer Street, just above the Ballpark neighborhood. It's one of the most eclectic areas in town, and local artists and musicians spend a lot of time on the couches in this sparse, urban shop.

  • The Cup Espresso Cafe

    1521 Pearl St. Boulder

    303-449-5173

The owners of the Cup Espresso Cafe are deadly serious about their coffee; they get it from Boulder's Conscious Coffees, a roasting company that specializes in organic, fair-trade coffee and works directly with the small farming cooperatives that grow their product. On the Cup website, you'll find detailed descriptions not just of how to brew a perfect cup, but also of regions the coffee comes from and the conditions under which growers work. All of which means you can feel thoroughly virtuous while enjoying the warm, bright atmosphere, pulling apart a flaky croissant and sipping your delicious, artfully drawn brew.

  • City Park Tavern

    3181 E. 23rd Ave., Denver Capitol Hill/Uptown/City Park

    720-865-4396

After reopening in 2020 following three years of reconstruction, the City Park Golf Course is one of the hardest tee times to book in Denver — even the driving range can require a wait. But the bar and outdoor patio, still shiny-new and overlooking the golf course and Denver skyline, always has a seat open. Catch a game on one of several TVs, wait for a spot on the course, or yuk it up with fellow golfers who've just finished their rounds. The beer is cheap, the food is fine and the views are prime, which is much more than a nineteenth hole requires — let alone at a municipal course. Hey, even the city can get something right once in a while.

  • Izzio Bakery

2669 Larimer St., Denver Five Points/RiNo

    720-381-0260

Izzio Artisan Bakery occupies a huge corner of the Denver Central Market. That's because a row of ovens lines the back wall; racks upon racks of loaves, boules and braided challah are nestled behind the countertop, and the pastry case is crammed with a mishmash of sweets: cinnamon rolls, croissants both sweet and savory, scones, Danishes, cookies and kouign-amann. If the sheer volume of baked goods doesn't bowl you over, consider the cafe menu, with granola bowls, fancy toasts for breakfast or lunch, pitas and weekend brunch specials. If you're heading to the Market, we recommend making this expansive spot your last stop — because if you start at Izzio, you might not ever leave.
  • Jay's Patio Cafe

    2563 15th St. Northwest Denver

    303-455-9275

Owner and chef Jay Solomon teaches cooking classes, writes cookbooks, and owns and operates two Jay's Patio Cafe locations ? one in Highland and one in the Denver Tech Center. Both restaurants have upscale American bistro atmospheres and menus featuring freshly prepared breakfast items, soups, salads and sandwiches. Early-bird customers can break their fasts with a capicola, egg and Swiss breakfast panino or a traditional Colorado breakfast burrito with eggs, bacon, cheese and green chiles. Later, lunch-goers can enjoy a bowl of their house sherry-mushroom soup and a lemony tuna Niçoise salad or a wasabi beef sandwich. Full espresso bars provide lattes and mochas to fuel the rest of the work day, and Jay’s offers gourmet box lunches as well, in case you want to treat the entire office.

  • Little Finch

1490 16th Street Mall Downtown Denver

    303-728-9746

Little Finch is the next iteration of chef-owner Mary Nguyen's Olive & Finch (which has locations in Uptown and Cherry Creek). But this new addition is not simply a scaled-down version of Olive & Finch. In many ways, it's actually a bigger concept, reaching beyond the bounds of a typical coffee shop, bar or eatery as it functions as all three at once. It serves sweet and savory pastries, salads and sandwiches, and fresh-pressed juices, wine, cocktails and mocktails. And as one of the few locally owned businesses on the 16th Street Mall, it's worth a visit for tourists and locals alike.

  • Little Spoons

1705 S. Pearl St. South Denver

    303-997-9496

Everything about this tiny Platt Park coffee shop and cafe is adorable — from its plates and silverware (mismatched) to its moniker (named after a spoon collection handed down to owner Amelia Di Marco from her grandmother) to the coffee, croissants, sweets and sandwiches served by Di Marco herself (delicious and delightful). She opened the spot on a landing outside a yoga studio, and while it can get crowded as yogis come and go, you'll feel at home thanks to Di Marco's gracious hospitality.

  • MCA Cafe

1485 Delgany St., Denver LoDo/Ballpark/Commons Park

    303-298-7554

The MCA Cafe, the restaurant at the Museum of Contemporary Art, is one of the coolest nosh joints around, thanks to a great selection of coffee and booze, surprisingly good sandwiches, pizzas, and charcuterie boards and spectacular views from the rooftop location. The rub? You have to cough up the museum's $12 admission charge to get in. A better option? The MCA's $55 individual annual membership. Not only do you receive all those VIP perks, but you get unlimited access to the restaurant, which feels like a cafe turned private clubhouse. You often have the place to yourself when it opens, and if you can hang on for nine hours, you'll watch it transform into a swanky members-only bar as night comes on.

  • Mead St. Provisions

    3625 W. 32nd Ave. Northwest Denver

    303-433-2138

This longtime Highland fixture opened as Mead Street Station in 1994, but in the summer of 2020, it closed down for some major renovations and a rebrand. When it reopened as Mead St. Provisions, it was decked out with a deli case loaded with charcuterie and other meats and had a new sandwich-heavy menu, though the place kept its low-key vibes and full bar that draws in the happy-hour crowd. Among the options are hot sandwiches, like the Italian beef with giardiniera and hot peppers and the chicken parm, along with cold deli sandwiches made with Boar's Head meats and built on bread from City Bakery with additions such as garlic aioli, hand-spun mozzarella and artichoke hearts.

  • Mona's Cafe

    1710 Sherman St. Central Denver

    303-832-3575

The first Mona's helped energize the Confluence Park area. The second Mona's was one of the leaders in the redevelopment of SoBo. Now Mona's has opened a third spot, in Uptown, which offers many of the dishes you find at its siblings. The difference, though, is that this Mona's Cafe is designed to cater to lunchers on the go, rather than the diners who take over tables at the other spots and linger for hours. While dine-in is available, there's no table service: just a takeout counter for those who want to grab-and-go, and casual seating for those who want to stick around. And if they do, they might want to stay until after work, when this Mona's features a happy hour filled with snacks and drink specials.
