  • Arapahoe Basin Ski Area

28194 US Highway 6, Dillon Mountains

    888-272-7246

Many consider Arapahoe Basin, endearingly known as A-Basin, to be one of the most underrated ski areas in the state. It certainly has the longest season -- usually from mid-October to early June – because the north-facing slopes get less sun and the snow sticks around. A-Basin is a sibling of Breckenridge and Keystone, and while it may not have their amount of acreage, it has plenty of steep glades, bump runs and and out-of-bounds skiing. It also has the best parking-lot parties of any mountain in the state.

  • The Bar Car

    819 Colorado Blvd. Central Denver

    720-524-8099

When Leigh Jones — of Horseshoe Lounge fame — bought the Recovery Room a decade ago, she overhauled it completely. The resulting Bar Car looks a little nondescript, but the rustic interior, with its old-timey railroad theme, is a pleasant surprise. Also pleasantly surprising, given Colorado Boulevard’s penchant for chains, is that the Bar Car is defiantly neighborhood-focused, offering a list of draft beers that’s heavy on locals. Patrons are local, too, whether they’re stopping by for the daily happy hour or the not-so-secret secret food menu, checking sports scores or just soaking up the warm surroundings late at night.

  • Bastien's Restaurant

3503 E. Colfax Ave. Central Denver

    303-322-0363

With its iconic sign, sunken bar and mid-century aesthetic, Bastien's is a holdover from times past — and we wouldn't have it any other way. The family-run business dates back to the 1930s, but the current restaurant was constructed from scratch in 1958. That sign outside the Googie-style building touts the famed Bastien’s sugar steak, but there are twelve other preparations to choose from. And whether or not you splurge on a full steak dinner, nothing beats sipping Colfax dirty martinis delivered by friendly servers who've been working at this classic for years.

  • Bistro Vendome

2267 Kearney St., Denver Park Hill/Mayfair/Lowry

    303-825-3232

Bistro Vendôme rises above kitschy French shtick with an alluring menu and warm hospitality typical of the restaurants run by chef Jennifer Jasinski and business partner Beth Gruitch. Timeless classics like onion soup, steak frites and escargot vie for attention alongside more modern, seasonally driven creations, giving guests plenty of options. The eatery also introduced a new kids' menu ("Oui Chefs") when it moved from its longtime Larimer Square location to the more family-friendly Park Hill neighborhood in February 2023. There, Bistro Vendôme maintains its charm with fresh interiors and an expansive, shady patio. Whether you’re stopping for some happy-hour bubbly or a brunchtime croque madame, Bistro Vendôme is as close as you’ll get to Paris in the Mile High City.

  • Denver Beer Co.

1695 Platte St., Denver LoDo/Ballpark/Commons Park

Like its name, Denver Beer Co. is simple and straightforward. The owners, Charlie Berger and Patrick Crawford, aren't trying to reinvent the wheel; they just want to make great beer. But you'll rarely find the same beer there twice, as Berger and Crawford are constantly coming up with new recipes for a wide variety of styles, all of which they make in their seven-barrel brewhouse. Also on the menu at the 3,400-square-foot spot, which includes an outdoor biergarten with long tables: big Bavarian-style pretzels with dipping sauces.

  • El Camino Community Tavern

    3628 W. 32nd Ave., Denver Highland/Lower Highland

    720-889-7946

The atmosphere at El Camino is fun and welcoming, and so is the food. While the board is too heavy on things like molten cheese and too light on things like intestines to really sate a craving for authentic Mexican food, it's also not hip like the menu at one of Rick Bayless's upscale Chicago joints. Instead, the food here is unpretentious, pulling from all regions of Mexico — simple fare, influenced by the desires of American palates, that pairs well with El Camino's killer margaritas. They're some of the best in town, as are the nachos.

  • Gaetano's

3760 Tejon St., Denver Highland/Lower Highland

    303-455-9852

Most of the red-sauce joints that once proliferated in northwest Denver have dried up, but Gaetano’s is now more than seventy years old. Of course, it’s gone through some changes over the decades after being founded by the Smaldone mob family, who installed bulletproof glass in the front door and ran illegal poker games in the basement. Gaetano’s is now run by Ron Robinson as a true neighborhood joint, one flavored by the traditions of the past but still very much ready to go another seventy years as a Denver landmark.

  • Grateful Bread Company

429 Violet St., Golden Northwest Denver Suburbs

    303-681-5406

If you've found yourself swept off your feet recently by an extra-crisp baguette or focaccia with just the right amount of oil and rosemary, there's a good chance it was made by Grateful Bread. This family-owned bakery in Golden supplies artisan loaves twice daily to a list of metro-area eateries that reads like a who's-who of the restaurant industry, including a disproportionate number of Best of Denver winners. The bakery's operation is primarily wholesale, but it opens its doors to the public every Saturday (holidays excepted), so you can buy sticky buns and jalapeño-cheddar pretzels to eat now, and levain and ciabatta to nosh on later. Don't miss the chewy quinoa bread, which toasts up wonderfully for a protein-packed start to the day. The bakery will also sell its loaves, buns and rolls this summer at the Union Station Farmer’s Market.

With seventeen Great American Beer Festival awards and five World Beer Cup awards -- not to mention a number-seven ranking in Beer Advocate's 2009 All-Time Top Breweries on Planet Earth -- it's quite clear that Great Divide knows a few things about making great beer. And there's no better way to experience one of the brewery's many beers than getting it right from the source at the Great Divide tap room.

  • Grizzly Rose

5450 N. Valley Highway North Denver

    303-295-1330

Country music will never die in Denver as long as the Grizzly Rose remains. Live music six nights a week, concerts by Nashville nationals, free dance lessons on Wednesdays and lots of space on the hardwood floor for honky tonkin' were among the attributes cited by the Country Music Association, which chose the Rose as one of the top clubs in the nation; regulars choose it because it's a local institution.

  • hi-dive

    7 S. Broadway South Denver

    303-733-0230

The bars at these conjoined spaces are two sides of the same coin — both a little worn and gritty, but still good for quick shots or planting yourself for the long haul. Since 2003, the hi-dive has been a refuge from crass commercialism and bland bars catering to the masses. Cheap, stiff drinks and a revolving door of creative talent have kept the music venue ahead of the game. Sputnik, on the other hand, offers a mid-century vibe, along with plenty of meatless fare.
