  • Blackbelly Market

    4334 W. 41st Ave., Denver Berkeley/Sunnyside

    720-476-5812

Blackbelly Market is the Denver outpost of the original in Boulder, which in turn is the breakfast-and-lunch spin-off of chef Hosea Rosenberg's fine-dining restaurant Blackbelly. Here you can grab a breakfast burrito brimming with green chile (a specialty of New Mexico native Rosenberg) or go whole hog with house-cured salumi, charcuterie, deli meats and other meaty wonders from this Michelin-recognized butchery team led by Kelly Kawachi. Grab a seat and order up a stacked sandwich and a monster chocolate chip cookie, or pop in for exquisite dry-aged steaks to impress your dinner guests.

Here's another Boulder gem dedicated to doing food the old-fashioned way. Blackbelly Market is the breakfast-and-lunch spin-off of chef Hosea Rosenberg's upscale dining room, Blackbelly, next door. Here you can grab a breakfast burrito brimming with green chile (a specialty of New Mexico native Rosenberg) or go whole hog with house-cured salumi, charcuterie, deli meats and other meaty wonders. Grab a seat for a stacked roast beef sandwich and a monster chocolate chip cookie, or pop in for exquisite dry-aged steaks to impress your dinner guests. • Cook's Fresh Market

    1600 Glenarm Place Downtown Denver

    303-893-2277

Cook's Fresh Market is a quick stop on the 16th Street Mall shuttle circuit, but you'll want to get off and stay a while once you get a glimpse of the gourmet bakery, deli, prepared-foods case, cheese counter and shelves stocked with homemade nibbles, European specialty foods and spices. There's even a small cooler in the back with bundles of fresh vegetables for purchase. But Cook's is more than willing to do the cooking for you: You can order lunch or dinner from the bistro menu and enjoy it in the modest dining area. The offerings include an epicurean salad with grilled chicken, duck or lots of fresh veggies, as well as build-your-own sandwiches with prosciutto, salami or chevre topped with spinach, sprouts or mixed greens. Owners/chefs Ed and Kristin Janos, who both graduated from the Culinary Institute of America, buy and serve local products and make everything from scratch using their own recipes.

  • The Denver Central Market

2669 Larimer St., Denver Five Points/RiNo

From your morning coffee run to lunch meetings on the patio and evening cocktails at Curio Bar, this circa 2016 food hall is an all-day destination for all things delicious in the heart of RiNo. Its eleven vendors sell everything from pizza, raw oysters and charcuterie boards to ice cream and gourmet chocolate — but this isn't just a place for dining in. The vendors here also offer baked goods, meats, specialty foods and pantry items for home use so that you can pick up dinner essentials while grabbing lunch items to go.

  • Dimestore Delibar

1575 Boulder St., Denver Highland/Lower Highland

    303-537-5323

With antiques and oddities strewn throughout, an aisle of pantry staples and fun finds like Pocky sticks and hot sauces, as well as an appealing menu that includes “dimeroll” rolled sandwiches, Dimestore Delibar isn’t just a bar, by any means. But the cocktails alone make it a standout, whether you’re hungry or not. Chef/co-owner Tim Dotson was formerly the chef at the Family Jones, so many of the drinks use that distillery’s spirits. One of the best ways to sip here: Enjoy a housemade shrub soda spiked with the booze of your choice while sitting on one of two patios.

  • La Popular

2033 Lawrence St., Denver Five Points/RiNo

    303-296-1687

Down in Texas, right on the border between El Paso and Juarez, there's a stand — actually, a shack — that sells the best tamales in the known universe. But they're only slightly better than the green-chile tamales sold every day at La Popular. These fat rolls of masa, pork and whole chunks of fiery chile come freshly steamed and still wrapped in their husks for easy eating on the run, and the rest of La Popular's small menu is just as good. Come on Monday, Wednesday or Friday for the chicharrones, or seven days a week for fresh masa.

  • Marczyk Fine Foods

    770 E. 17th Ave., Denver Capitol Hill/Uptown/City Park

    303-894-9499

The dynamic husband-and-wife duo of Pete Marczyk and Barbara MacFarlane opened Marczyk Fine Foods in the Uptown neighborhood of Denver in 2002 — the same year they had their son, Kaz. Since then, both Kaz and the Marcyzk empire have grown; Pete's brother, Paul, has joined the team, and a second store was added in 2011. The original shop is now an institution in the Uptown neighborhood, known as much for its special events — the Friday Burger Night in the summer, the Old Spice contest, the recipes (and ingredients) served up for holidays — as for its quality meats, produce, packaged goods, to-go prepared dishes and the bread that Pete learned to bake, to make sure the quality was up to Marczyk standards. There's a smart wine shop in back, too. When you drop by Marczyk Fine Foods, you know this crew is always cooking up something good – and if you follow their advice, you can, too.

  • Marczyk Fine Foods

5100 E. Colfax Ave. East Denver

    303-243-3355

Every neighborhood in town wants a Marczyk Fine Foods, a small, upscale market where the service is as choice as the items offered for sale. But for the first decade, brothers Pete and Paul Marczyk and Pete’s wife, Barbara, focused on providing a quality store for the Uptown neighborhood – and everyone driving through. In 2011, though, they branched out with a second store a few miles away on Colfax Avenue, renovated an old hardware store into a garden of good eatin’. As with the original store, there’s an attached wine shop – and the popular Burger Night is offered on Fridays in summer here, too.

  • Mondo Market

    2501 Dallas St. Aurora

    303-248-3983

Mondo Market is steadily carving out spots in food halls around town (the Source in 2013, Stanley Marketplace in 2017), bringing them its blend of sit-down dining, high-end takeout and fancy groceries. That old adage about how you should never go food shopping while you're hungry? Mondo has taken it to heart, saving shoppers from impulse purchases by providing them with cheese and salumi boards (or cones, if they don't have to time to sit down); a spread of sandwiches that includes such ingredients as brown butter aioli, housemade gyros and giardiniera; and build-your-own pasta bowls. The Aurora location has one distinct advantage over the Denver shop: a liquor license, so you can quench your thirst with beer, wine or a cocktail while you shop for cocktail onions.

  • Parisi

    4401 Tennyson St., Denver Berkeley/Sunnyside

    303-561-0234

Parisi has gone through many iterations in its 26 years, but one constant has been owner Christine Parisi’s passion for sharing Italian fare. The business originally opened in 1998 as a market and deli before moving to Tennyson Street and leaning into serving prepared foods, including fresh pastas and panini. While its fine-dining downstairs sibling, Firenze a Tavola, has remained closed since the pandemic, Parisi has continued to meet the neighborhood where it is, offering a fast-casual escape where the food is always comforting and made with care.

  • Pochitos Tortilla Factory

    4421 Tejon St. Northwest Denver

    303-433-2358

A north Denver staple, Pochitos Tortilla Factory is a humble Mexican spot where everything is made fresh and sold in bulk. From tortillas and chips and salsas to refried beans and Mexican rice, the family-owned business is the place to go to stock up for an at-home feast. But the tamales are the true standout, available in both red and green styles and sold by the half or full dozen. While Pochitos also sells masa for those taking on the labor-intensive task of making tamales at home, one taste of these will convince anyone to leave it to the pros.

  • Satchel's on 6th

    1710 E. 6th Ave. Central Denver

    303-399-2560

After running the quirky Satchel's Market in Park Hill for five years, Andrew Casalini and his wife, Jen Dactano, decided to get serious. They closed their original restaurant in order to open a place in a part of town where they thought the neighbors might be more interested in an upscale concept, initially one focusing on small plates, desserts and a wine list. They picked up a prime piece of real estate on Sixth Avenue, as well as an impressive partner: Larimer Associates, a group that's had its hand in numerous restaurants around town, including Ernie's Bar & Pizza, Billy's Inn and Madison Street. With that addition came a change in vision: By the time Satchel's on 6th opened in the spring of 2011, it had been transformed into a neighborhood joint serving an upscale, well-done New American menu that changes with the seasons. The new Satchel's maintains a lot of the whimsy that was a hallmark of the old place, but everything from the food to the wine list to the service is much more polished.

  • Spinelli's Market

    4621 E. 23rd Ave., Denver Park Hill/Mayfair/Lowry

    303-329-8143

Spinelli's opened in Park Hill in 1994, but it feels like it's been around far longer. The friendly neighborhood market is stocked with essentials as well as some gourmet finds — but before you browse, head directly to the deli counter in the back to place your order from a long menu of sandwich options. There are a few tables in the front where you can eat, but these hefty sandwiches are ideal for taking on a picnic or along for a mid-show snack at Red Rocks.
