  • Golden Moon Speakeasy

1111 Miner's Alley, Golden West Denver Suburbs

    720-638-1155

In 2007, when the U.S. government finally allowed absinthe to be made and sold in this country, distiller Stephen Gould was ready. By 2008, his hobby had become Golden Moon Distillery, which has since expanded to an eclectic lineup of liqueurs. In 2014, this tasting room that doubles as a destination for classic cocktails opened in downtown Golden, in an alley just off the main drag. All of the booze on the back bar comes from the distillery, which is located across town, and the skilled bar staff excels at showing it off in a variety of libations.

  • Distillery 291

1647 S. Tejon St., Colorado Springs Southern Colorado

    719-323-8010

In his past life, Distillery 291 proprietor Michael Myers was a celebrity photographer, but he'd acquired a fascination with whiskey and the West when he was a kid in Tennessee. In 2011, he moved to Colorado with his sons, and that September he launched 291, with a goal of capturing classic pioneering spirit in every bottle. Distillery 291's whiskeys certainly carry a whiff of Colorado — they're finished on aspen staves, which impart a bit of forest to the nose — and we're fascinated by the clarity of these spirits, a quality that make them comparable to Japanese whiskeys. You taste the precision through the entire line, from the lightly aged and mildly sweet American whiskey to the heady, woodsy Colorado bourbon. The spirits are a delight to sip neat or on the rocks, and their unique character makes us look forward to this operation's next release, be it a happy accident, like the recent high rye bourbon, or something intentional and unusual.

    MEET THE OWNERS

    Samuel Gunnels aka Rawley
Rawley Gunnels has been the event planner, community creator and distiller for DV8 Distillery since he co-founded the company in 2015. His intuition and wide open heart hold the community with tenderness and care. Anyone who knows DV8 knows Rawley, and anyone who knows Rawley is better for it. When he's not working his booty off throwing freaky events, or making spirits, Rawley is either pursuing his music project The Echo 88 or researching the newest technology in male G strings. Come to one of our events (post Covid) and see what his research has yielded. He likes hugs that go on for too long, being a public spectacle and being spanked so hard most people give up.

    Johnathan Tilley aka JT
JT has been the operations manager, distiller, and R&D expert for DV8 Distillery since he co-founded the company in 2015. His compassion and stalwart heart is the steady hand that guides this queer, kinky, island of misfits through the troubled waters of life. When he isn't giving sound advice to community members, going out with his partners (he's poly), or planning the next phase of DV8's future, he can be found getting rolled by his opposition in League of Legends(Ranked GoldIV Add him: ElMoosiePoo). He likes movies that make him cry, all-you-can-eat sushi, and meta scheming the creation of a society that makes more sense for real humans. Meta scheming in general really... Pitch him your weirdest and he'll dig right in.

  • Golden Moon Distillery

412 Violet St., Golden Northwest Denver Suburbs

    303-993-7174

In 2007, when the U.S. government finally allowed absinthe to be made and sold in this country, distiller Stephen Gould was ready. He'd already accumulated antique stills in his garage, and he began to experiment with producing the infamous green fairy. That hobby turned into Golden Moon Distillery in 2008, which has since expanded to an eclectic lineup of eighteen liqueurs. Golden Moon distills some rarely produced libations, such as crème de violette, amer dit picon and grappa, but all of Golden Moon's spirits are crafted by Gould's skillful hand, with no artificial ingredients and a painstaking adherence to traditional distilling methods, many of which date back to the 1800s. You can taste the fruits of his labors at the Golden Moon Speakeasy.

  • Laws Whiskey House

1420 S. Acoma St. Southwest Denver

    720-570-1420

Laws Whiskey House bills itself as a grain-to-glass distillery, a phrase you might be tempted to deride as meaningless, given that all distilled spirits start with grain. But pop into the tasting room, and you'll hear the lore behind the whiskeys, down to the names of the farmers who grow the wheat, corn, barley and rye. The operation even gives a nod to its growers with the Farmers Select Single Barrel, a run managed by the farmers who grow and malt Laws's rye. Much of what goes into these whiskeys is grown in Colorado, helping to create an award-winning core line as well as one-off experiments.

  • Leopold Bros.

    5285 Joliet St. East Denver

    303-307-1515

Leopold Bros. was born in 1999, when Todd and Scott, the brothers in question, opened a brewery in Michigan. They soon expanded their operations to distilling and relocated to Colorado in 2008. It seems like they've been here much longer, though, because both the breadth and the depth of their product lines are truly impressive. Compare the subtle differences between the Rocky Mountain and Georgia Peach whiskeys; take a sip of regular gin, then take a nip of Navy-Strength Leopold's Gin to see what it tastes like on steroids. With new products being developed on a regular basis, you're sure to find something for every palate.

    303-431-4949

Meagan and Patrick Miller were inspired to open what became America's first single pot whiskey distillery, Talnua in Arvada, while on their honeymoon in Ireland. At the distillery's tasting room, spirits are highlighted in a collection of reimagined takes on the classic Old Fashioned, with such options as the Elvis, in which whiskey is infused with plantains and peanut butter that has been fat-washed with bacon; the Wasabi Tsunami, made with wasabi popcorn-infused gin; and the Lemon Espress Old Fashioned, which combines Hunter Bay Moose Drool coffee and lemon oleo.

  • Wood's High Mountain Distillery

    144 W. 1st St., Salida Southern Colorado

Brothers Lee and P.T. Woods began distilling in 2012, opened their doors to the public in March 2013, and have been crafting excellent whiskey, rye, gin and liqueurs ever since. Their Salida tasting room is pure Colorado: Nature photography lines the exposed brick walls of this former auto-body shop, and a kayak dangles from the ceiling. And while you don't have to drive 140 miles to have a taste of the distinctive, smooth-but-smoky Wood's Tenderfoot Whiskey (it's available at a number of local liquor stores), can you think of a better way to enjoy it than after biking through the Arkansas Hills or soaking in the nearby Mount Princeton hot springs? We can't.
